PREPARING FOR JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERY

Joint replacement surgeries are done in order to decrease the pain and rescue from the problems related to the joint. If the surgeon suggests you a joint replacement surgery and you decides to undergo for the procedure, you will have to prepare for it. You will have to prepare yourself mentally and physically for the procedure.

The first and foremost thing that you have to do is to discuss about the surgery with the doctor. You should share your expectations and doubts with the doctor. Next thing is to assemble your personal and medical information. Before the surgery, people will ask many questions regarding your medical history, legal arrangements and insurance coverage. In order to avoid these repeated questioning, it is better to write down all the things.

Preparing physically is the next step. For that, you may have to omit some of your habits and may also have to adopt some. Suggestions for physical preparations are:

  • Quit smoking if you have the habit. It will help you in fast recovery.

  • Do not use alcohol. Try to avoid drinking at least 48 hours prior to the surgery.

  • If you are overweight, try to loose weight. If you are underweight, eat well. Maintain your body in a balanced level.

  • Try to do pre-surgical exercises. The doctor can suggest you the apt exercises for you.

  • Plan about the procedure after surgery, that can accelerate the recovery. The last minute preparations are very important.
